Breast cancer affects around 50k women each year in UK with 85% people surviving breast cancer for over 5 years. Albeit that is only possible with early detection and timely treatment.
When I was in sixth form, I remember a friend being paranoid about a lump in her breast but being too reluctant to get it tested. Her stress levels spiked in anticipation and it went on for a while until she discussed the issue with the head teacher who happened to be an ex-nurse. The head teacher heard her out and checked her for any signs of lumps. She was clear of any symptoms and was finally relaxed. The moral of the story is that awareness and yearly check-ups should not be avoided specially by younger women. If statistics are to be believed, a staggering 1 in 8 women in UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Donating to a cause that is likely to affect the lives of those around us is like taking preventative measures to safeguard our society.
