My scalp has always suffered from feeling itchy and inflamed with the obvious consequence of hair fall. Desperate times called for oiling, dandruff shampoos and even hair tablets. I was looking up remedies for hair psoriasis when it was repeatedly highlighted that a common cause for irritated scalps and brittleness was SLS in shampoos.
SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) is a common ingredient used in most toiletries including shampoos as it is responsible for creating foam and lather that we all use as a measure of 'is the product doing it's job?'. Apparently some people are more sensitive to such agents than others; my scalp being one of them.
The SLS strips off any essential oils and nutrients from your hair over prolonged use and makes it dull and brittle by weakening the hair follicles. In sensitive scalps it can lead to severe inflammation and itchiness which becomes a pain in the backside to tackle with. If you are like me and wash your hair every other day, then this can lead to some serious bad scalp days. Plus, Sulphate strips off pigmentation in coloured hair leading to faster fading of colour which we spent fortunes perfecting.
To deal with this issue, a lot of companies have started jumping on the SLS free bandwagon. Loreal has an affordable range of SLS free shampoo with botanical oils for sensitive skin. I tried the Loreal Hair Expertise – Dazzling Colour and Moisture Shampoo a month ago and it seemed to drastically improve the health of my hair and scalp.
I stick to a routine of oiling my hair 20 mins before hair wash or slathering it in some sort of a hair mask, using Neutrogena T-gel (for scalp psoriasis) once a week along with SLS free shampoos. Scalp inflammation and dandruff has subsided to almost 20% of what it used to be. So it wasn’t a surprise that I ended up buying half a dozen shampoos with Boots offering buy 2 get 3rd free! With each 250 ml tube retailing at £6.20, it’s worth getting 3 shampoos for £12.40. Plus, there’s lots of ranges to choose from, which are all infused with Rosemary oil to protect and moisturise the hair.
